Award Eligibility

  • Participation: Eligibility is exclusive to in-person presentations at BioMedEng24. The judges’ decisions are final and binding.
  • Impact: The presented research or work should distinctly show potential to contribute to the replacement of animals in scientific research or testing.
  • Ethical Consideration: Entries must adhere strictly to animal-free research guidelines. This includes a prohibition on the use of living animals, animal tissues, cells, or cell lines in the presented work.
  • Innovation: Work that facilitates a shift towards animal-free methodologies, including the substitution of animal-derived biomaterials in current practices, is encouraged.
  • Commitment to Impact: Candidates aiming for this award must pledge to allocate the prize funds within 12 months (by 4th September 2025) towards activities that enhance the dissemination and impact of their work on animal-free science. A detailed report on the expenditure must be submitted to RSPCA and Animal Free Research UK by 31st December 2025.

Call for Nominations: BioMedEng Innovation and Legacy Awards 2024

The Biomedical Engineering Association is delighted to announce the call for nominations for the prestigious 2024 BioMedEng Innovation and Legacy Awards. These awards celebrate the remarkable contributions of individuals in the field of Biomedical Engineering within the UK, highlighting their groundbreaking achievements and their dedication to advancing the discipline.

Awards Overview

BioMedEng Legacy Prize

This accolade is reserved for a distinguished UK Bioengineer, Biomedical Engineer, or Medical Engineer whose career-long research and mentorship have significantly contributed to inspiring and educating the next generation of academics, researchers, and students in the field. The Legacy Prize recognises individuals whose efforts have paved the way for future innovations and sustained the growth of the biomedical engineering community.

BioMedEng Innovation Prize

The Innovation Prize is awarded to a UK Bioengineer, Biomedical Engineer, or Medical Engineer whose creative and pioneering work has introduced new avenues within the discipline and/or resulted in novel technologies that enhance medical interventions. This award honours those who have made significant strides in pushing the boundaries of what is possible in biomedical engineering, leading to advancements that have real-world applications in improving patient care.

Nomination Process

We invite you to nominate individuals who you believe have made significant contributions to the field of Biomedical Engineering and are deserving of recognition through the BioMedEng Innovation Prize or the BioMedEng Legacy Prize.

How to Nominate

To nominate a candidate for either award, please prepare and send an email including the following information:

  • Nominee’s Details: Name and contact details of the nominee, along with a short biography highlighting their achievements and contributions to the field of Biomedical Engineering.
  • Your Contact Details: Your name and contact information.
  • Supporting Statement: A brief description explaining why you believe the nominee should be considered for the specified award. Please include specific examples of their contributions to innovation or legacy within the discipline.

Deadline for Nominations

Please ensure that your nominations are submitted by 28th July 2024, as nominations received after this date may not be considered.
