Committee

“I am honoured and delighted to host the UK’s Biomedical Engineering Community, in an open, friendly and collaborative environment that will showcase our world-class research, savoir faire and entrepreneurship. As Vice-Dean for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, I am also looking forward at making our event inclusive and equitable, which is part of the fundamental ethos of UCL and a key part of what makes UCL Engineering special.”

Professor Vanessa Diaz (UCL Mechanical Engineering)
Chair of the UCL Organising Committee

Over the last decade we have witnessed biomedical technology playing a pivotal role in measurement, assessment and therapy provision. Clinicians, researchers, insurers, politicians and engineers alike desire affordable technology systems that span to clinical and home environment, are easy to use and result in functional gains that carryover to every-day life. I look forward to working with the BioMedEng 2022 organising committee to deliver a conference that promotes the translation of biomedical technologies across fields and its clinical delivery.”

Professor Rui Loureiro (UCL Aspire CREATe)
Co-Chair of the UCL Organising Committee

Prof Vanessa Diaz – Co-Chair

Vanessa is a Professor of Healthcare Engineering at UCL and leads an internationally recognised cardiovascular engineering group as well as the vascular engineering platform at the Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences, at UCL.  Vanessa is leading ground-breaking work to make ‘precision vascular surgery’ a reality and collaborates with many hospitals, including Barts and the Royal Free in London, as well as many patient groups. Vanessa is PI of a number of grants funded by charities, the EU and UKRI. She’s a BioMedEng Council Member and also the Vice-Dean for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at UCL Engineering.

Prof Rui Loureiro – Co-Chair

Rui Loureiro is Professor of Surgical & Rehabilitation Engineering and head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Science and the Aspire Centre for Rehabilitation Engineering & Assistive Technology (CREATe) at UCL. He specialises in advanced robotics and human interactive systems for surgery and rehabilitation. He has pioneered work in stroke rehabilitation, movement disorders and neuropathic pain, and has a wealth of experience with both the design of rehabilitation technologies and translation of such aids to clinical practice. He is associated with a number of professional organisations, has filed six patents, raised over £23m in research, commercial and infrastructure grants and his work has been highly cited.

Dr Antonio Lombardo

Antonio Lombardo is a Lecturer in Nanostructures and Devices at the London Centre for Nanotechnology (LCN) and the Electronic and Electrical Engineering Department, UCL. His research is focussed on design, fabrication and testing of novel electronic devices based on 2D materials, 2D materials heterostructures and 2D/3D integration for applications in high frequency biosensing, neuromorphic computing and energy-efficient electronics

Federica Ninno

Federica Ninno is a PhD student in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, working in the Multiscale Cardiovascular Engineering Group at the Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences, UCL.
Her research focuses on restenosis prediction models combining clinical, demographic and patient-specific hemodynamics information after minimally-invasive procedures for peripheral arterial disease treatment.

Dr Sarah Keating

Sarah Keating PhD is a Senior Research Software Developer at UCL. She is also a coordinator of the COmputational Modeling in BIology NEtwork (COMBINE) and has over 20 years experience in developing standards and the supporting software infrastructure that facilitates encoding the whole cycle of simulation experiments from model to results. This allows biologists, bioengineers and anyone needing to use models to benefit from Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reproducible i.e. FAIR models.

Louis Girardin

Louis Girardin, PhD Student, Multiscale cardiovascular Engineering Group. His work is on doing numerical tools for aortic dissection mixing medical data and CFD.

Dr Rupy Kaur Matharu

Rupy Kaur Matharu is a Research Fellow on the UKRI funded AIRBODS (Airborne Infection Reduction through Building Operation and Design for SARS-CoV-2) project. She is looking at how ventilation and other factors affect the risk of transmission at large non-domestic public gatherings. Rupy also has a wealth of experience in a range of disciplines from Biomaterials to Tissue Engineering.

Dr Hirak K Patra

Hirak is an Associate Professor of Nanomedicine and Regenerative Medicines at the Department of Surgical Biotechnology and the current DGT Research (UCL-DSIS) at the Faculty of Medicine. He is an expert in Nanomedicine and Regenerative Medicine and interested in understanding, developing, and engineering immune-safe, blood compatible nano and macroscale molecular nano-biosystems for ‘Advanced Healthcare Challenges’. The major emphasis of ‘The Patra Lab’ is on establishing programmable and implantable nano-biosystems for personalised solution.

Dr Pawel Markiewicz

Pawel Markiewicz PhD is a senior postdoctoral researcher in PET image reconstruction and analysis at the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering and the Centre of Medical Imaging Computing. He is also a PET imaging scientific consultant to Oncovision.

Dr Daniel Stuckey

Daniel Stuckey is a British Heart Foundation Senior Research Fellow and heads pre-clinical cardiovascular imaging at UCL’s Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging. He leads a team that develops and applies novel multi-modality imaging approaches for guiding and enhancing the efficacy of regenerative biomaterial therapies for cardiovascular disease.

Ebba Montgomery Liljeroth

Ebba is a final year PhD student in Biomechanical Engineering at the Cardiovascular Engineering Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, UCL. Her research focuses on the design of novel medical devices, in particular cardiovascular stents, for which she is exploring the use of auxetic structures to mimic the natural deformations of the great vessels. She is also working with the Clinical Cardiovascular Engineering team at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children/UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Science on an EU project for in-silico testing and validation of cardiovascular implantable devices.
